Drawing on Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz and the uncanny worlds of Shirley Jackson, Brown conjures something instinctive and elusive, where the human, natural and supernatural combine. Verdant greens and icy blues pulse against flashes of ruby, violet and white as paint streaks, dissolves and reforms — until a branch, a figure, a ghost of flesh surfaces, then slips away.
Following a major exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, this is a rare moment to experience — and acquire — one of Cecily Brown’s most compelling works.
