The Week I Review | Special Actors in an intriguing follow-up to One Cut of the Dead | Movie Review @TheWeekIReview | Uploaded July 2020 | Updated October 2024, 9 hours ago.
Episode 95: The 2020 Japan Cuts Film Festival is happening online through July 30th. I've been going through the lineup, and over the next week, I'm going to do short reviews of a few of them, starting with the opening night film, Special Actors. If you're interested (and you should be), tickets are available here: japancuts.japansociety.org
As for the movie: well, it's Shin'ichirô Ueda's second feature. He shocked everyone with his debut, One Cut of the Dead, and now there's some hype behind him. And that hype was stressful, so he made a movie about a guy who's stressed out. But Special Actors is a rather different movie, albeit one with the same sensibilities.
