![Your Resume Gap Isnt the Problem
Stop treating your resume gap like a red flag. Start treating it like an opportunity.
Career coach and @workhap founder Sho Dewan says that how you tell your career story is often more important than the story itself. “If you feel a certain way about it, it’s gonna come across in everything.”
Watch as Sho helps a data science grad student rethink a two-year resume gap. As Sho digs deeper, he learns the student spent that time job searching, earning a degree and using technical skills to support a friends real estate business. In other words, the gap wasnt a gap at all.
Sho recommends these steps to reframe your resume gap:
1️⃣ Make a list of good outcomes from that span of time
2️⃣ Take a moment to appreciate everything you accomplished
3️⃣ Work on translating the skills you have for the role you want
Want more advice on telling your career story? In his new LinkedIn Learning course, “Networking in Action,” Sho helps three professionals nail down their narratives as they navigate todays tough job market. His takeaway: [Employers] dont care about the gap. They care about you and whether you have the skills to do the job.
