In this series we examine conclusively which blocks mobs do or do not spawn on. Although the minecraft wiki can supply answers to many of the questions this series will ask there are two issues with this: 1. The wiki can be edited by anyone and filled with speculation, and; 2. Many people will refuse to believe certain facts on the wiki unless they are presented with hard proof (which can be difficult to come by). That's where this series comes in - it provides irrefutable proof of what mobs can and can't spawn on.

Black Aperture is a Minecraft testing facility filled with some of the most advanced contraptions in the game and which pays homage to two of the greatest video game franchises ever created, Half Life and Portal.
[R&D]
The Black Aperture [R&D] side-series is comprised of easy-to follow tutorials for complex creations developed within the Black Aperture testing facility.
The Proxy
The player proximity detector - or Proxy - is my take on a player sensor/detector. Although it is a little more costly in terms of materials than some other designs currently out there, it is also one of the most compact and quiet, making it much easier to hide.
Materials required:
- Building blocks
- 1 x Fence Gate
- 1 x Lever
- 1 x Redstone Torch
- 7 x Redstone Dust
- 10 x Redstone Repeaters
- 4 x Minecart Rail
- 1 x Detector Rail
- 7 x Powered Rail
- At least one Iron Golem

Black Aperture is a Minecraft testing facility filled with some of the most advanced contraptions in the game and which pays homage to two of the greatest video game franchises ever created, Half Life and Portal.
[Phase One]
In Phase One, the facility is still in its infancy and, although still packed with Minecraft inventions (like a teleporter, wireless redstone, and a multi-floor bi-directional elevator), the facility is looking extremely bare. This is simply the beginning.
Episode 2: Proximal
While work on the elevator enters its final stages, the facility around it has yet to begin taking shape. However, the elevator now requires only a handful of features to be added until construction can begin. Regardless, research and development continues unabated and several creations spring up around the facility including a compact player proximity detector (nicknamed Proxy), and some devious BUD-controlled mines.
