Fossil description
Hippurites were a type of extinct marine bivalve mollusk (like clams) that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, around 70-90 million years ago.
Unlike most clams, Hippurites had an unusual shape:
• One shell (the lower one) was long, cone-shaped, and anchored in the sea floor.
• The other shell (the upper one) was small and flat, like a lid.
They belonged to a group called rudists, which often formed reef-like structures in warm, shallow seas-similar to how corals do today.
Fossil Hippurites are often found in limestone rocks in the Mediterranean region, including Croatia, Italy, and Spain. They look like thick, hollow tubes or horn-shaped shells and are common in areas that were once ancient tropical seas.
