King Leonidas I of Sparta, born around 540 BC, became a prominent warrior king, leading his state's formidable military. In 480 BC, facing a massive Persian invasion led by Xerxes, Leonidas commanded a small Greek force, including 300 elite Spartans, at the narrow pass of Thermopylae. For two days, they valiantly held off the numerically superior Persian army, inflicting heavy casualties. Despite being outflanked by a hidden path, Leonidas and his remaining men fought to the death, a heroic sacrifice that, while a defeat, provided crucial time for other Greek forces to prepare and ultimately contributed to the decisive Greek victories at Salamis and Plataea. Leonidas's legendary stand remains an enduring symbol of courage against overwhelming odds.
