I've been meaning to try this after seeing Lars from Survival Russia use one of his Silky saws for flint and steel. I tried it first at home with a piece of chert and it threw great sparks, so I headed to the woods to see if I could make it work in the real world with a piece of found quartz.

The downed tree was a red alder that had been smashed when the creek flooded. Directly over a creek isn't necessarily the best place to find dry wood, but this tree felt dry to me, so I chose it to get the fire going, along with some hemlock branches as a booster. Once the fire was nice and hot, I added some soggy big leaf maple rounds to make it last.
