Spain was officially neutral during the Second World War, yet hundreds of Spanish pilots and ground personnel volunteered to serve alongside the Luftwaffe on the Eastern Front. In 1942, the Second Blue Squadron—15. (Span)/JG 51—arrived in Germany, trained on the Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-2, and prepared for combat over the Orel sector.
Its pilots were less experienced than those of the first Spanish Blue Squadron, but their first weeks at the front would be anything but quiet. From hurried scrambles under enemy attack to encounters with Il-2 Sturmoviks, DB-3 bombers, Pe-2s, LaGG-3s, and I-16 “Ratas,” the Spaniards soon found themselves facing the full intensity of the Soviet air war.
This video follows the opening phase of the Second Escuadrilla Azul’s deployment with JG 51: its training, arrival at the front, first aerial victories, combat losses, and a day that became the unit’s greatest success so far.
