I think I could make just about any piece of wood, bow drill. I’ve used the wood from box springs, shovel handles, pruning shears handles, a wooden spoon, 100 year old wood siding, many species of trees, etc.
What makes the potential stock even easier to bow drill is if it is spalted. Spalted wood is usually from fallen or stressed trees, that have been discolored and patterned by fungi, creating beautiful dark lines and lighter areas. This natural process involves fungi breaking down wood components, resulting in unique, sought-after designs. That is what I’m using today from my batonings bucket that I filled 4 days ago with White Oak. Happily, there are many spalted pieces to choose from.
