Every year, a small Spanish coastal town creates something extraordinary — only to watch it disappear days later.
In northern Spain, a community of around 11,000 people spends 10 months designing and building monumental flower-covered sculptures, growing the flowers themselves and preparing thousands of blooms for one spectacular celebration.
Then comes the final rush: in just 72 hours, freshly cut dahlias and other flowers are pinned onto the floats by hand. Some sculptures can carry up to 180,000 individual flowers.
The festival’s origins date back to 1908, when a celebration involving local fishing guilds evolved into one of Spain’s most remarkable cultural traditions.
What makes it even more fascinating is that the flowers are not preserved. They fade, turn brown and disappear shortly after the parade.
