SpaceX Starship Flight 8 explodes during test flight Here's What Happened
Hey everyone, SpaceX launched the eighth test flight of Starship on Thursday night.
The test flight began at 5:30 p.m. CT from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas. After standing down from a planned launch on Monday, the company finally gave the green light for Thursday’s attempt. Elon Musk mentioned that they scrubbed Monday’s flight because there were “too many question marks.” SpaceX wanted to make sure everything was ready before trying again.
But the real problem came after that. As Starship climbed higher, it was supposed to fire its engines for a set amount of time to push itself into space. About 20 seconds before that phase ended, SpaceX lost contact with Starship. During the livestream, viewers could see some of Starship’s engines cutting out.
The countdown for a Starship launch is not just about waiting for a clock to hit zero. It’s a process packed with checks, adjustments, and rapid decisions, all happening within seconds. At T-minus 42 seconds, SpaceX has a critical decision point. This is where they can pause the countdown if needed to perform final checkouts or adjustments to pressurization systems. If everything looks good, the countdown continues. If not, they can recycle back to T-minus 400 seconds to review what went wrong and decide if the launch can proceed.
