Whenever we see something SpaceX does and we say, “that’s peak, they can’t possibly surprise me again,” they come right back and prove us wrong. This time, it’s Falcon 9 passing the 600-launch mark as a rocket family. More than six hundred orbital missions flown by the same basic vehicle design. In the history of spaceflight, that number is almost unheard of in the modern era.
What makes this even more impressive is how fast it happened. Falcon 9 first flew in 2010. In just fifteen years, it reached a launch count that used to take entire generations of rockets decades to achieve. And it didn’t do it by flying once or twice a year. In 2025 alone, SpaceX launched over 160 orbital missions, the vast majority of them Falcon 9 flights. Some boosters are now flying more than 30 times each, something no orbital-class rocket ever came close to before.
To understand how unusual this is, it helps to look at the rockets that dominated earlier eras.
The Soviet and Russian Soyuz family is still the all-time record holder in raw numbers, with more than 1,700 launches since 1966. But that number took almost 60 years to build, and nearly all of those flights were expendable. China’s Long March family recently reached its 600th launch, but that total includes dozens of different rocket versions spread across more than five decades.
