If you've ever taken a photography class, you may have heard that cameras don't work the way our eyes do. Turns out, modern satellites don't work the way cameras do. Imagers and sensors take in terabytes (a lot!) of data in a form humans struggle to make sense of.
That's where the Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) comes in. This team of scientific programmers turns data into imagery we can make sense of, allowing us to see what satellites "see" and enhancing how researchers understand their data. Greg Shirah has been with the SVS for more than 20 years, helping develop techniques and furthering technology that makes data visualization better.

![NASAs Roman Space Telescope: Systems, Assemble!
In September 2024, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope passed a key milestone and was approved for the next stage of construction. Work on the main systems that will make up the final spacecraft is finishing, and the team at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center is ready to begin integration, the process of connecting them together. This video celebrates the effort to reach the final stages of assembly.

Launching no later than May 2027, Roman is NASA’s next flagship mission. An infrared survey telescope with the same resolution as Hubble, but 100 times the field of view, Roman is being built and tested at NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Partners from across the country are contributing to this effort.

![LuGRE: Testing GNSS Capabilities from the Moon!
The Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (LuGRE) will investigate whether signals from two Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and European Union’s Galileo, can be tracked at the Moon and used for positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). This experiment is a collaborative effort between NASA and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The receiver was developed by Qascom, an Italian aerospace company. LuGRE is a part of the NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and is hosted on Firefly Aerospaces “Blue Ghost lunar lander.

![NASA’s Illuminate: A Kaleidoscope Sun
NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has been watching the Sun for 15 years — and this spacecraft sees much more than meets the eye!
SDO’s 10 imaging channels capture visible, ultraviolet, and extreme ultraviolet light, helping scientists study solar material at a range of different temperatures. Together, they reveal a prismatic picture of our ever-changing star.

![“Cosmic Sea Slug” Appears in Hubble’s 36th Birthday Image
NASA is celebrating the 36th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope with a stunning new look at the Trifid Nebula, a star-forming region about 5,000 light-years away. Powerful ultraviolet light from massive stars has carved out this glowing bubble, triggering new waves of star birth.
First imaged in 1997, Hubble revisits this scene nearly 30 years later with sharper vision. The image reveals a structure nicknamed the “Cosmic Sea Slug,” including a jet from Herbig-Haro 399, showing how young stars actively shape their surroundings.
Bright stars, dark dust, and glowing gas tell the story of stars forming and evolving. Over time, the nebula will fade, leaving only stars behind. For 36 years, Hubble has transformed how we see the universe, and it’s not done yet.
