Spac3 Invaders Extr3me, developed by Taito and published by Square Enix in 2008

"The Earth is in danger again! Battle through countless alien hordes using incredible new power-ups and bonus stages to help you defeat the alien bosses with style."

A space invaders game with a difference. Now you get to blast aliens with an auditable rhythm whilst collecting bonuses to enhance your score and being a Taito game there are lost of seemingly hidden bonuses to find hidden behind alien colour combinations. At the end of each stage there is a boss battle which doesnt add to your score. so no need to worry about misses or chaining here.

There is a glairing bug in the ppsspp emu that causes the backgrounds to be corrupted which is a real shame but apart from that it plays real nice. The game can be played how you like. Casual in a just shoot, avoiding getting hit and making it to the end. You lose nothing for playing this way. Shooting ships running across the top of the screen can unlock a mini game bonus round and completing it will allow you to skip to the next level with an overpowered weapon. If fever mode is triggered then you will have another score multiplier running.

On the other hand if you are a score chaser then there is a ranking system and going for S rank ion each level will award a score bonus at the end of the run to hopefully get S rank overall. Getting S rank on the first level is quite challenging as you don't have an no miss bonuses yet (no miss means no lives lost). Your main score bonus is going to be from chaining shots. The chain is on a timer so as long as you are hitting something even an alien shot the chain continues. You also get a large bonus for no shots missed during a level so aiming for no misses is a good way to boost your score in this first stage. It's tempting just to hold fire and let rip but you don't really want to be doing that in the first stage. The yellow ufo is what you want to trigger though allowing you to go for a bonus item, the white 100,000 bonus in particular. fire when it is on the left and you should hit it. Getting S rank is much easier on later levels if you have a no miss bonus building up.

The longplay firstly goes through arcade mode. There are branching paths and it is required to play through it four times to unlock all the levels in stage mode. The difficulty is higher at the bottom of the grid. NOTE: I lost most of the capture so this video is missing the initial run on the Hard path. Easy is shown and then Extreme mode followed by Endless mode.

Stage mode allows you to set a score on a per level basis. Completing any route in Arcade mode will unlock Extreme arcade mode. This is a set of five harder levels and completing it unlocks Endless mode which as it's name suggests is .. endless. It loops all levels from stage one normal, then extreme before moving to stage two and the cycles continues. There score at the top is the score you will end with once all lives are gone with no bonuses at the end.

Overall this is a great game and plays just as well as it's Nintendo DS versions released around the same time.
