The body is placed in a stainless steel chamber filled with water and a strong alkali (usually potassium hydroxide).
Heated (around 160–302 °C / 320–580 °F) under pressure, the alkali breaks down soft tissue into sterile liquid and leaves behind white bone fragments.
The leftover water (“hydrolysate”) often treated by wastewater systems.
States where it’s legal
As of now, at least 24 U.S. states explicitly allow alkaline hydrolysis:
