The Polikarpov R-1 was the first military aircraft to be produced in the Soviet Union and was an unlicensed copy of the British de Havilland DH-9, mainly powered by the Soviet-built M-5 version of the American Liberty Engine.
Over 2,400 examples were built in the Soviet Union, the type serving as the standard Soviet light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft through the 1920s.
