STORYLINE:
South Korea has sent a rapid response team to Nepal Thursday, a day after massive flooding hit the country, to support search and rescue efforts for nine South Korean nationals who remain unaccounted for.
The Rapid Response Team consisting of Foreign Ministry, the National Police Agency and the National Fire Agency arrived at Incheon Airport to board a plane to Kathmandu, which was set to depart at 2 p.m. local time (0500GMT).
Leader of the rapid response team Lim Sang-woo told journalists that the team would do its utmost to ensure swift and safe search and rescue operations for South Korean nationals in Nepal.
Massive flash floods in a border area of Nepal and China killed at least 160 people and left hundreds of tourists, workers and others missing Wednesday after suddenly sweeping through communities and halting travel in some areas. Experts said a glacial collapse caused the disaster in the warming Himalayan region.
Police in Nepal reported at least 157 dead. China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported at least three dead and 265 missing in the Tibet region’s Gyirong County near the national border.
