Dozens of pieces of South Charleston history were sealed away Saturday in a time capsule, not set to be open until 50 years from now.
Mayor Frank Mullens said the time capsule's filling couldn't have come at a better time in the history of South Charleston.
"With all the things we have going on, all the growth, all the change, Jefferson Road, the Park Place, all the things we have going on," Mullens said. "It's really a good time to do it, kind of coincidental I guess, but it does make it a good time to do it. It lets everybody know kind of the highlights in there, the highlights of what we have going on."
The city opened a time capsule on July 4 that was put in the ground in 1976. Work to fill another vessel to preserve time for future generations started right away.
"We've been collecting items for the past couple of months from different businesses, organizations, city government and educational institutions representing our area," South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Amanda Ream said. "We've got some letters that are going in that people prepared a letter to 2076."
Mullens wrote a letter to be placed in the capsule that only future generations will see one day, half a century from now.
"I hope they're proud of us," he said. "I hope they're proud of what we did. I hope they see we had some vision and some growth. I wrote a letter to be stuck in there to tell them a little bit about what's going on, and how much I wish them well in the future. It's kind of nostalgic or what word you want to use, to write a letter to the future when I won't be there to listen to them if they're reading it."
