As tensions with Britain grew over issues like taxation and colonial governance, South Carolina became a center of revolutionary activity. The colony established a provincial congress in 1775, effectively replacing British authority, and soon after began raising militias and preparing for war.
The Siege of Charleston was one of the major British victories of the American Revolutionary War and the worst American defeat of the conflict. Where British forces under General Sir Henry Clinton, supported by a large fleet, surrounded and besieged the city. After weeks of bombardment and encirclement, American General Benjamin Lincoln was forced to surrender, resulting in the capture of over 5,000 American troops. The fall of Charleston gave the British control over much of the South and emboldened their Southern Campaign, but it also triggered fierce guerrilla resistance throughout the Carolinas.
