This is the South Australian Rider Safe Part 1 with Mrs Rider Guider
Here's a run down of what the first day entails which is a four hour session ...

On the first day of the course, you will have several chapters of a DVD to watch, followed by going out onto the practice range to practise the tasks that were covered in that chapter.

The first task will be learning the controls of the motorbike, such as clutch, throttle, and brakes. You will learn how to mount and dismount the bike and to push it back and forth whilst stood at the side of it.

Sitting on the bike, you will be asked to start the engine holding in the clutch, then select first gear and slowly release the clutch until you find the friction point and the bike starts to very slowly move forward whilst both feet are still touching the ground as you walk the bike forward. Then you repeat this with your feet off the ground. You will then learn to walk your bike backwards whilst sat on it.

The next part is about braking and cornering. You will use first gear to basically ride around the outside of the practice range. You will be instructed to look through the corners.
After that you will look at changing gears from first to second and then back down to first as you stop at a designated cone, putting your left foot on the ground, before setting off again.

You will then do a slower lap around the course, using first and second gears, doing a sequence of 90 degree turns through a one metre gap using the friction point for control.

The next stage entails weaving, or slalom, using the cats’ eyes on the range. This gets you used to the feel of the bike and is not assessed. This is done as a group, giving you the feel of riding with others, whilst monitoring your own speed, braking and distance from other riders. Whilst doing this the instructors will call you into the centre to ride around a circle in second gear, mimicking a roundabout, where you will need to maintain a good speed and looking well into the bend at all times and keeping your head up!
That’s it for day one!
