South Africa is once again preparing to expand social welfare spending, this time through a proposed new Basic Income Support grant that could eventually replace the temporary COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant.
The Department of Social Development hopes to finalise the policy by March 2027, paving the way for legislation and implementation in the following financial year. But with taxpayers already funding billions of rands in social assistance programmes, many South Africans are asking an important question: can the country actually afford this?
