Look, we have a massive problem unfolding right now in South Africa, and things are about to get a whole lot worse. I’ve always been very vocal about supporting the rights of South Africans to protect their borders and address illegal migration—especially when everyday people feel like they aren't getting value from the 3 million-plus migrants living in their country. But as the great economist Thomas Sowell always says: there are no solutions, only trade-offs. And right now, the trade-offs of this June 30th migrant ultimatum are getting incredibly dangerous for South Africa’s own economy.
Because of the recent anti-immigrant protests and viral clips of locals shutting down businesses—even legal, tax-paying African entrepreneurs who employ dozens of South Africans—the rest of the continent is hitting back hard.
Here is the breakdown of the massive fallout happening right now:
The Entertainment Boycott: South Africa is a cultural and musical juggernaut, especially with the global rise of Amapiano. But because of this hostility, countries like Uganda and Kenya are cancelling South African artists and DJs. Unlike Nigerian Afro-beats, which has a massive footprints in Europe and the UK, South African artists make a huge portion of their bread and butter touring right here on the continent. Now, local promoters are being pressured by the public to completely freeze them out.
The Tourism Collapse: Going to South Africa used to be the ultimate dream destination for middle-class Africans in East and West Africa. Now? People are terrified for their safety. Flight reservations and hotel bookings are being cancelled in droves. Those wealthy African tourism dollars are now diverting straight to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar, completely starving the African ecosystem of growth.
Continental Isolation: By forcing out long-term, tax-paying entrepreneurs who actually train and employ local workers, South Africa risks completely isolating itself as a trade partner on the world stage.
Make no mistake: if African governments had done right by their own citizens in the first place, these migrants wouldn't have fled to South Africa to begin with. But if South Africa chooses total isolation by June 30th, they have to be ready to deal with the heavy economic consequences when the continent decides to look past them.
