South Africa has officially launched a new state-backed satellite internet and communications initiative, raising major questions about the future of connectivity, competition, and government involvement in telecommunications.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile announced the launch of BrainSat Satellite Services, a company linked to UAE satellite communications giant Space42. The project forms part of South Africa’s broader satellite communications strategy and aims to improve internet access in rural communities while supporting sectors such as mining, energy, maritime operations, and emergency services.
But the timing has many South Africans asking questions.
As debates continue around Starlink and South Africa’s regulatory requirements, some are wondering whether this new satellite service is being positioned as an alternative to SpaceX’s network.
