Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is situated on the eastern slope of Table Mountain, on the outskirts of Cape Town. The garden was established in 1913 with the aim of protecting and showcasing South Africa’s unique native flora.
Kirstenbosch forms part of the Cape Floristic Region, an area of exceptional plant diversity. A key component of this is the fynbos. This low-lying, often scrubby landscape comprises thousands of different plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.
Kirstenbosch is home to many species of proteas, the characteristic flowers of South Africa. It also features countless species of heath plants, restios and native trees.
The garden is not only a botanical research and nature reserve, but also a popular destination for visitors. There are walking trails through various landscapes and along the slopes of Table Mountain. One of the most striking features is the Canopy Walk, an elevated walkway that winds its way through the treetops and offers views across the garden.
