A word from Cameron about the piece:
"Sounds Like Queensland is a new work specially commissioned by Queensland Symphony Orchestra for the online launch of its 2023 season.
Synched to a specially created film, the work is built primarily from a five-note recurring motif and a longer “B” theme. It is a celebration of both the Orchestra and the varied and dramatic landscapes of the wonderful state of Queensland.
Each of the work’s five sections is designed to showcase certain soloists and sections of the orchestra. After the sparkling opening with its plaintive horn solo, the solo oboe and woodwind section are featured. A showcase of the brass follows, featuring a trio of trumpet, horn and tenor trombone. A mysterious section based around the strings is next, with a spotlight on a quartet of soloists. The percussion drive the push into the celebratory final section for full orchestra. The music dies out with the woodwinds and trumpet throwing the main motif and a return of the opening horn tune back and forth.
I’m deeply honoured to be able to dedicate this piece to the memory of my late mother, Robin, who passed away last year. A lover of the arts, who guided myself and my siblings into working professionally in music, she was a lifelong Queenslander and proud resident of the state. Indeed, she was crowned Miss Queensland as part of the Miss Australia Quest in 1956."
