This video contains material from the Soundgate digital audio-visual installation. Computer modelling recreates both what it sounds like and looks like to be at Stonehenge, caves in Spain featuring prehistoric paintings and the Hellenistic Paphos Theatre in Cyprus.
This was created as part of the Songs of the Caves and EMAP projects exploring sound archaeology, music archaeology and archaeoacoustics.
These are digital renders from an interactive computer game model made in Unreal Engine 4. The project was directed by Dr Rupert Till of the University of Huddersfield in the UK.
In the caves you will see digital models created using photogrammetry, and hear recordings made in the caves. Try listening with headphones on. You will see the caves of La Pasiega, El Castillo, La Garma, Tito Bustillo and Las Chimeneas, in Cantabria and Asturias.
You will hear and see a digital model of Stonehenge. We added various bid sounds, crow, robin, blackbird and song thrush in the day, and nightingale, corn crake and owls at night. You will also hear a replica of a bird bone flute, the WIlsford flute, found in the Wilsford Shaft archaeological excavation, and which dates from a similar period. You should hear the acoustic change as you move from 3000 BCE to 2900, 2500 and 2200 BCE.
Paphos Theare is recreated, along with waves and seagulls, the Cyprus warbler, Cyprus wheatear, dove and pigeon. You will hear Aulos and Lituus, classical period musical instruments, and you hear more of the reverberation of the space as you move away from the front.
