Depending on who you ask, and when, dubstep is either a very popular American patchworking style, with abrasive, energetic, bright juxtapositions of bass sounds, and a lot of melodic and harmonic colour (see Skrillex among many others, and consider also the edges and boundaries of brostep, riddim, and colour bass in particular), or it's a pretty dark, thinky British garage offshoot from ten years prior, with roots in 2-step and the Jamaican soundsystem movement.
