Soul Song
First thing I remember, was maybe 5yrs old
Sitting in the classroom, doing what I was told
My teacher taught me how to draw, and how to write my name
I didn't always want to but I'd do it just the same
She taught me everything a young boy needed to know
But she never... talked to me ...about my soul.
Every Sunday morning, off to church we'd go
Sitting with my family, just doing what I was told
The preacher taught me how to pray & the words of sacred hymns
And ‘bout a man who died for me, to save me from my sins
He taught me everything a young boy needed to know
But he never... talked to me... about my soul.
No words of wonder for me to hear
No words of wonder could fall on my ears
And some years later, at 18 yrs old
Sitting in the lecture hall doing what I was told
They taught me how to cut through flesh, and pills I could prescribe
They taught me how to save a life, and the feelings I must hide
They taught me everything a young man needed to know
But they never talked to me about my soul.
Some time later, maybe20yrs old
I met someone and watched somehow another world unfold
She taught me how to laugh and love, and not to reason why
She taught me how to save my life, with feelings I couldn't hide
She taught me everything a young man needed to know
And – she taught me - 'bout my soul
