Here is a way to teach categorizing using pictures. In this program, I present a stack of pictures to the learner and tell them to sort into piles of things that belong together. After the learner sorts, I ask the learner what is in each pile. This allows the learner to explain their thinking. Just because a learner doesn't sort the way I would, doesn't mean that the learner didn't sort correctly. Sometimes our learners think of different categories than us! If the answer doesn't make sense, then I help the learner to problem solve and may provide some examples of other ways to sort.
