Following its arrival on board the International Space Station, Sophie completed the checkout and activation of the European Enhanced Exploration Exercise Device (E4D), marking the start of a two-year technology demonstration led by ESA in Columbus. During this period, astronauts will evaluate the device's design, operational performance and effectiveness in counteracting the physical deconditioning caused by life in microgravity.

![Printing metal in space with our 3D printer 🧑🚀
Our astronaut Sophie Adenot shared this video on her social media channels with the caption:
[EN] Day 133, orbit 2063 — In this timelapse, Im retrieving the fourth sample printed with the European Metal 3D printer… and getting everything ready for the next printing session! Before opening the printer, the procedure requires putting on safety goggles and a mask, just in case there are any floating nanoparticles.
3D printers are far from being simple gadgets. They aim at increasing crew autonomy, which will be even more crucial during future exploration missions, when resupply will be far more difficult than it is in low Earth orbit. With 3D printing, we could manufacture spare parts 🔩 or tools 🔧 on demand!
On Earth, this printer weighs about 180 kg. In orbit, it weighs nothing – but its mass hasnt disappeared. When I handled it, its inertia made it very clear that it is heavy 😉
Full disclosure: as often happens in extreme environments, emotions are heightened… I felt a huge sense of joy using this electric screwdriver, which we very rarely use onboard the ISS. Since I love tinkering, it genuinely made me really, really happy 😃 haha! It reminded me of what I love doing back on Earth!
From spare parts to tools on demand, this is what real autonomy in deep space could look like.

![Sophie celebrates her 44th birthday on the International Space Station
This video was published on social media by ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot with the following caption:
[EN] Day 147, orbit 2289 — I received so much love from my loved ones, friends, crewmates and ground teams on my birthday last Sunday… Thank you also for your lovely birthday messages on social media – they truly mean a lot to me.
I can say with absolute certainty that I’ll never forget the day I completed my 44th trip around the Sun while circling the Earth!
Our Russian crewmates are the master bakers on board the International Space Station, and the multi-layered cake – made with honey bread, yogurt, sweetened milk, rehydrated berries and topped with pine nuts – was absolutely delicious!
We can’t light traditional candles for birthdays (because: fire), but we do have a torch lamp decorated with coloured tape to simulate a flame! The trick, of course, is to turn it off at exactly the same moment you’re blowing on it!
There was no magic involved either in Columbus, where the Astro Pi computers were displaying a lit candle 🕯 on their screens… When I blew on them, the humidity sensor detected my breath and triggered the program to display a second image, this time of an extinguished candle! Thanks, ESA Education!
I can’t begin to express how wonderful these traditions made me feel – truly at home away from home. One week later, and my feet still haven’t touched the ground!
Jour 147, orbite 2289 – J’ai reçu tellement d’amour de la part de mes proches, de mes amis, de mes coéquipiers et des équipes au sol pour mon anniversaire dimanche dernier… J’ai été très touchée également par tous vos gentils messages sur les réseaux sociaux : merci beaucoup.
Je peux affirmer avec une absolue certitude que je n’oublierai jamais le jour où j’ai bouclé ma 44ᵉ révolution autour du Soleil tout en tournant autour de la Terre !
Nos coéquipiers russes sont les maîtres pâtissiers de la Station spatiale internationale, et le gâteau d’anniversaire – composé de biscuit au miel, de yaourt, de lait concentré sucré, de fruits rouges réhydratés et garni de pignons de pin – était absolument délicieux !
Nous ne pouvons pas allumer de vraies bougies d’anniversaire (pas de feu à bord !), mais nous avons une lampe-torche décorée avec du ruban adhésif jaune en forme de flamme ! L’astuce, bien sûr, c’est d’éteindre la lampe au moment où l’on souffle dessus, pour faire semblant, haha ! Le système D, comme d’habitude !
Pas de magie à l’œuvre non plus dans Columbus, où les ordinateurs Astro Pi affichaient une bougie allumée sur leurs écrans… Lorsque j’ai soufflé dessus, le capteur d’humidité a détecté mon souffle et le programme a affiché l’image d’une bougie éteinte ! Merci ESA Education !
Ces traditions ont rendu cette journée encore plus spéciale; je me suis sentie choyée comme à la maison alors que j’étais loin de chez moi et des miens. Il s’est passé une semaine depuis et je n’ai toujours pas les pieds sur Terre !
