Sony’s push toward a digital-only PlayStation future may be creating a much bigger problem than expected. With physical game backlash refusing to die, Xbox leaning into game preservation, and new Gamescom rumors claiming Sony could be reconsidering its strategy, the fight over physical games just got a lot more interesting.
Sony has not officially reversed its plan to end physical production for new PlayStation games beginning in 2028, and the latest claims coming out of Gamescom remain unverified. But reports of publisher frustration, Microsoft’s new Xbox Disc-to-Digital program, and speculation surrounding the next Xbox are putting even more pressure on PlayStation’s physical media decision.
In this video, I break down why Sony’s digital-only strategy may be backfiring, what the latest PlayStation physical games rumors actually say, why Xbox suddenly has a huge opportunity, and whether the ongoing NO DISC, NO BUY backlash is having more impact than Sony expected.
