Sony is phasing out physical PlayStation discs by January 2028, it's arguing in court that no "reasonable consumer" ever believed they owned a digital game, and now it's threatening to cut off customer support and pursue legal action against people who cross the line with its employees. Three moves. Same direction.

Sony Japan published a new customer harassment policy on September 1 that lays out prohibited customer behavior and warns that support can be restricted or suspended, a policy that lines up with Japan's recent law requiring companies to protect workers from abusive customers. And to be clear up front: nobody should be screaming at a support rep or a retail employee over a corporate decision those people had nothing to do with. That's not the story.

The story is how we got here. Sony announced the end of disc production. Then, in a class action over the PlayStation Store's "Buy" button, Sony's lawyers argued that digital ownership isn't even logically possible, pointing out that two plaintiffs bought the same game days apart as proof you were never buying a thing. Sony has also moved to push the case into individual arbitration under its own terms of service. Meanwhile there are lawsuits in the UK, a complaint in Mexico, and a consumer group action in the Netherlands.

So in this one: what the harassment policy actually says, why the timing is a disaster, what the "reasonable consumers" filing really argued, and what any of this means for your library after 2028.

Everything here is based on public reporting and public court filings. Allegations in the lawsuits are allegations. Opinions are mine, loudly.
