Sony have finally announced their long-awaited A7V full-frame dual-card camera. This camera features a brand new 33MP partially stacked sensor and Bionz XR2 processor. Designed for primarily stills shooters, Sony clearly did not want to compromise the stills performance by releasing this camera prematurely (as seen with the 24MP 'partially stacked' sensor we first saw in the Nikon Z6III which has much lower dynamic range when shooting 20fps). Sony have, however, finally found out how to deliver both high dynamic range and high frames per second (with less shutter distortion) when using the electronic shutter with its new 33MP 'partially stacked' sensor. 30fps is now possible with the electronic shutter while shooting 14bit Raw files (the Canon R6 III shoots 40fps, but these files are only 12 bit Raw and with reduced dynamic range). The competing cameras from Nikon, Canon and Panasonic all take a significant drop in dynamic range when shooting at these high frame rates, so it would seem that Sony A7V owners now get great dynamic range and high frames per second without compromise.
The A7V can also shoot 4K 60p movies without a significant crop and has the Dynamic Active SteadyShot feature, but does not support RAW video capture, 7K movies or Open Gate recording. I would, however, expect to see this new 33MP partially stacked sensor to appear in a Sony FX Cinema Line camera (with an in-built cooling fan) in 2026. So if you are a Sony photographer that primarily shoots video, I would wait for the next Sony Cinema Line camera (FX) rather than purchase an Alpha camera that is primarily designed for hybrid stills photographers.
