First play today with Threnody from the software company Soniccouture. I’ve frequently turned to their releases in my work, especially those on a more cinematic level. Threnody channels the spirit of Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-2020) in the use of unusual articulations of string instruments. Rather than more traditional string playing, here you can explore clouds of sound, with arcs of glissandi and extended playing techniques, something that you’d be familiar hearing in sci-fi and horror films. What’s interesting here is how the orchestra can then be treated electronically if you wish, so suddenly you can transform the motion of string players into hypnotic swooping arps, perfect for that scene when the hero chases the alien through a dystopian landscape! As I said, this is only a first little exploration, but here’s to more hours experimenting with the possibilities!
