Way back in 1997, Genesis emulation was only recently a thing, and GenEm was apparently the second emulator ever, and the first with sound support. Now, GenEm didn't exactly emulate the sound, computers were much slower back then, (even though they don't feel much slower) and they also usually had a Sound Blaster card or a clone of it in them, and these sound cards did more than just play audio at the time, for the same reason that video game consoles at the time had their own sound hardware for playing music, storage space was limited. But what's interesting is the sound chip in a Sound Blaster responsible for music, was closely related to the Genesis's sound chip, so trying to just convert the music in Genesis games to it was quite a clever idea. (In fact, the same technique was used in the Windows 95 version of Sonic & Knuckles.)
There's just one problem with all this. GenEm is very lousy at this, and in the case of Sonic (one of the games it does better!) the result resembles more industrial music. It's rather amusing at least.
