I saw this US DVD OVA trailer and was blown away once upon a time. I only wish the anime OVA itself lived up to the childhood imaginings of a more serious anime based on the Sonic 3 Sega Genesis game. Imagining a great struggle featuring the Death Egg, the Chaos Emeralds, etc etc. Alas...
Still, a great trailer. Tried using a few programs to enhance the quality of the DVD trailer. Started by using dgIndex to create a project file, then tried using animeIVTC scripts to deinterlace through virtualdub. Then used DAIN to double the FPS, and manually remove frames with noticeable artifacts. Next I played around using realESRGAN and Video Enhance AI. Choosing to stick with the latter after comparing results to the original. Made some mistakes along the way which cost a bunch of time.
Probably should have stopped there, but ended up using Photoshop and Gigapixel AI through the built in automation to SLOWLY process all 5700+ frames. The results were very nice compared to the original. Though, introduced moving noise that wasn't noticed when looking at still images. Could probably deal with cleaning that up... Still might? But, I'd REALLY like to be done with this lol.
Lastly, used SVP to raise the FPS further to 60 fps for youtube playback. Here's hoping youtube's compression will eliminate enough of the noise from the 9 GB video file lol.
It didn't end there... due to weird artifacts showing up in the uploaded video that weren't in the footage, I ended up editing a few scenes individually to try boosting the quality a tad. If I REALLY wanted it to be completely clean, I could take a photo perfect image and recreate several of the scenes to look flawless... But I already spent enough time xD Oh, and updating the driver to encode h.264 NVENC seemed to fix the artifacts. Can't say if the quality dipped because of that though... Well sadly, watching the final 1.3 GB file and then the compressed youtube encoding, it did lose noticable quality. That said it's nice to be finished!
In any case, enjoy this blast from the past. The 90s art style/animation is classic.
