The art is nearly done!! Layout isn't really changed, since I am just testing graphics. Sonic has an all-new palette since his original palette blended into the sky of this stage. Diamond Desert's first Zone (the present, shown here) takes place in a fusion of southwestern desert aesthetics, and some Egyptian stuff (the upside down pyramids with eyes, the Egyptian drums being the vertical springs). Had I had more tiles to work with, some more imagery, like a Sphinx, maybe an Osiris statue would have been made for the game.
I need to learn how to expand level sizes like in Sonic 2: Zen Island, so that the game's levels can be larger. This Zone is made to have many downward right-facing slopes, and one part will have an emphasis on hopping amongst the clouds. Like the larger Genesis cousins, I hope to have multiple routes you can take when possible. At least a high route and a low route.
