I found out accidently you can grind on the rail above the pulley in Network Terminal/Chemical Plant. Just make sure you double jump on top of it instead of homing attacking the handle and you'll grind it. Unless you save some boost for the end of the rail you won't actually make it to the spring.

This isn't any faster than using the pulley, in fact it's probably a little slower since you grind slower than the pulley and you have to save what little boost you actually get before this part so it serves no real practical use. However there are perhaps two reasons you'd want to do this.

a) Grinding on actually gives you a points bonus every second like it does in Sonic Colours, so if you're going for a score attack it might be marginally useful.
b) It looks cool and you want to style whilst you play.

Also the way the camera just hangs on the spring as Sonic falls to his death is funny to me.
