Pitch Corrected Feedback Experiment with Piano Harp
This video is a contribution towards the Pianobook community Winter Voices library where Christian Henson of Spitfire Audio is trying to build a massive sample library made up of evolving voices and textural sound sources from user submissions.
Here I'm using an antique German 'Royal Piano Harp' which is a type of zither with lower stings set out in chords and upper strings in chromatic pairs which gives a lot of sympathetic resonance, in other words it likes to ring out a lot when strings are played. There's a lot of strings and it's seemingly never quite in tune despite my best efforts!
So I tried a few things without success but eventually struck upon the idea that pitch correcting or auto tuning feedback might yield interesting results. So here I'm feeding audio from a stereo pair of homemade contact mics attached to my piano harp into Reaper, though the MAutoPitch plugin set to a single note to match the note played, then allowing that audio to play back into the piano harp causing a very strange sounding feedback effect with the natural resonances of the strings fighting against the auto tune. It's helped by a little formant shift in MAutoPitch too that stirs thing up a little. I added a bit of Valhalla Super Massive reverb which makes everything sound better. I've also shaped the attack to suit the type of submission the sample library needs and I think it's all the better for it.
