I've always wanted to do this, Happy 35th anniversary Sonic!
QnA:
Q: You know that @Kohchu has done this already right?
A: Yes! And I highly recommend checking out their video as well! I think their version is great but there were a few things I wanted to do differently, such as when and where some scenes are placed, having the flashbacks all play at the start in order, having the status of each character on screen at once, removing the more 'video gamey' elements such as loading screens and end of level scores, a day-night cycle to track the days, having just one cutscene play for all characters involved (more on this later), as well as having the 3 additional characters (Tikal, Eggman and Chaos).
I've just always wanted to make a video like this since I was a kid so this is just my own interpretation of the same idea, I think both our videos can exist in their own right :)
Q: Why did you put X scene at Y time?
A: Naturally I did my best to put everything in order but there are probably a few events that can be debated. For the most part I tried to sync things up to the time of day. The game takes place over about 3-4 days so I tried to sync them up based on that, but sometimes even that isn't enough to fully explain it. For instance Big has huge gaps in his story that make it near impossible to place at times. Also there are scenes like Gamma's creation which could take place almost any time before his first scene with another character. So yeah I did my best but there may be some weird things here and there that you may disagree on, but if you have any questions about my placement, feel free to ask!
Q: Why is Sonic's gameplay playing on Tails' screen?
A: Throughout a lot of their stories, Sonic and Tails are together, but Tails only gets to play small segments of Sonic's levels despite being there the whole time. As such I occasionally show Sonic on Tails' screen to say "Tails is right there next to Sonic". I guess I could have just left it blank, but I think it's more interesting to at least see Tails behind Sonic in those moments.
Q: Why didn't you add the characters meeting in the adventure fields?
A: With the exception of Knuckles seeing Sonic and Tails outside of Casinopolis, I just found that those moments really didn't work with the idea of an ongoing narrative. For instance you can find Sonic in Big's story saying "I have to go after the robot!" but he's just... standing there. Wouldn't really work well if Sonic was actively doing things on his screen. Plus they also somewhat infamously aren't in the right spot all the time, again Big's story has characters all over the place at all sorts of times of day that don't fit. So yeah, they're nice while playing but didn't really work for this project.
Q: Sonic Adventure uses different audio for the same cutscenes in different stories, why didn't you include them?
A: Yeah so if you didn't know, every cutscene that has two or more characters in it play out slightly differently from story to story, having different lines and sometimes even different takes of the same lines. I believe this is to keep each playthrough of each story a little bit different and interesting.
But for this video I decided to omit them, the main idea for this video is that I wanted to show off the "true" series of events which meant just one interpretation for each scene, as while I do like the idea of each character interpreting a scene differently, I want to tell the story straight and remove the clutter where possible.
And in case you were wondering who's story I pick for each scene the order I picked was
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, Gamma
With Sonic's cutscenes being considered the "truest" interpretation of events.
Q: I see a mistake!
A: Yeah that's probably inevitable. Truth be told I think I went about it the wrong way, where I edited each story as I recorded them, leading to a lot of difficulty later on when I got to Big and Gamma's stories. Basically it got really complicated and hard to keep track of by the end. I actually ended up re-rending it 3 times as I kept seeing little mistakes on my watch-throughs that I wanted to fix. So I did the best I could but yeah.
