The low score challenge on Metal Harbor has become the basic canonical example of the challenge, perhaps due to its perceived inflexibility being put to shame. However, that video was made almost 4 years ago and was based on some outdated knowledge.
I've put this up to succeed it, by doing the same challenge on hard mode. Hard mode starts out easier, particularly at the first long beetle chain, but after that you find there are more ways to inadvertently get hit (and in a scoreless run you can't have any rings or shields). Additionally, the section after the last checkpoint (was a rocket on normal, now is a beetle chain on hard) becomes the new hardest obstacle. You can't clear that much distance unassisted, but if you jump in a specific direction, and homing attack at a very precise location (on top of a beetle robot while it's spawning) you'll take a strange path with the homing attack through the rest of the spawning beetles without touching any of them, eventually hitting the spring beetle with no points.
To make this a worthy successor to the m1 low score run, I decided to be a lot more reckless here, throwing in a bunch of playaround. Title cards aren't used in this video, so there's an abrupt cut of about 6 minutes 40 seconds while I wait for the time bonus to run out.
And just for the sake of those who bother to click the "more" in the description, putting on the board out of nowhere requires the Dreamcast version and a second controller; press Y on that second controller at any time in the level to get the board.
