The songwriting process can feel mysterious at the best of times. A catchy chorus, a great hook, original chord progression, meaningful lyrics... how can we come up with these things once, nevermind every time we write a song?
But the answer is easy. I'll bet you have never heard this said before. All you have to do is...write from the heart. What does that mean? Isn't it as clear as day and self-explanatory?
When I first started songwriting I heard this piece of advice over and over again. I emoted all over my songs, I poured my heart and soul into the songs I was writing. Million-dollar record deals and hoards of adoring fans were just around the corner. So out I went and started playing my heart filled songs to people waiting for my adulation. And I waited, and waited...but no one cared! no one was moved to tears or was jumping around with excitement. But what went wrong? Had everyone just gone deaf? Nope.
You see the truth is, no one cares how YOU feel when you write a song. You, me and everyone else only care about what they feel when they are listening to your song. It took me a while to realize but HOW you write is actually way more important then WHAT you write.
Yep, that's right the craft of songwriting is actually a craft. There are tools, techniques, and methods that great songwriters use to produce songs that make you feel things. I created this video about some of those tools and methods so you can be aware of them and learn how to use them to achieve the desired reaction from your audience.
