Song Loan (or song lang or song lan) - percussion instrument from Vietnam: The center part of this instrument is called song loan and is a kind of a wooden bell. A song loan is a percussion instrument (idiophone) used in Vietnamese traditional music. The song loan consists of a hollow wooden body about 7 cm in diameter attached to a flexible curved piece ended with a wooden ball. The song loan is mostly used to keep the beat in Vietnamese traditional chamber music such as ca Huế, and theatrical music such as nhạc tài tử and cải lương.
Whenever I travel to a new country, I search for a musical instrument to add to my vast collection. I bought this song loan in a little music shop in Vietnam. I particularly liked this version with beautiful wood carving and bells around.
