Sometimes protection doesn’t look like protection.
Sometimes it looks like a delay. A broken necklace. A flat tire. A road you weren’t planning to take.
In this August Chat with Santa Muerte, I’m sharing what happened during our trip to Virginia Beach for my brother’s retirement after 26 years in the Navy and why the entire experience left me thinking differently about protection, signs, intuition and spiritual discernment.
On the drive to Virginia Beach, we encountered accident after accident. While sitting just behind one particularly horrific accident, my Santa Muerte necklace suddenly came apart.
I didn’t feel called to throw her away.
I felt called to cleanse her, repair her and put her back around my neck.
I placed her among marigolds from my own garden, spoke with another Santa Muerte devotee about what had happened, offered roses to Santísima at the ocean and eventually took the necklace into the Atlantic to cleanse it.
The night before we left Virginia Beach, I sat alone on the beach around 11 PM. The tide was incredibly low. The wind felt heavy. I talked to Santa Muerte, thanked her for protecting us and then simply sat there and listened.
The following morning, approximately five minutes after leaving my brother’s house, we discovered a large piece of metal in our tire.
That interruption delayed us.
Our timing changed.
And later, another serious accident affected the route we had planned to take home.
Was it supernatural intervention? I can’t prove that, and I don’t need to.
This conversation isn’t about turning every inconvenience into a sign. It’s about leaving room for spiritual meaning while still practicing discernment.
Sometimes a nail is just a nail.
Sometimes traffic is just traffic.
