What is the Third Man Factor, and why do people on the brink of death sometimes feel that someone is standing beside them?
Mountaineers, polar explorers, sailors, pilots, and disaster survivors have described the same unexplained experience: an invisible companion appears at the most critical moment, speaks to them, guides them, and sometimes seems to help keep them alive.
The phenomenon is known as the “Third Man Factor” or a “felt presence” — the strange sensation that another person is nearby even though, physically, you are completely alone.
One of the most famous accounts comes from Ernest Shackleton’s expedition.
In 1916, Shackleton, Frank Worsley, and Tom Crean crossed the mountains and glaciers of South Georgia following the loss of the Endurance. The three men traveled for 36 hours with almost no food or sleep, desperately trying to reach a whaling station and save the rest of the expedition.
Years later, Shackleton admitted something unusual: during the crossing, he repeatedly had the impression that there was another person traveling with them.
Worsley and Crean independently described the same sensation.
But Shackleton was far from the only one.
Neuroscientists Olaf Blanke and Shahar Arzy were able to trigger a similar experience through electrical stimulation of the temporoparietal region of the brain. A patient suddenly sensed a figure standing directly behind her. When the stimulation stopped, the presence disappeared.
Later experiments using a robotic system revealed something even stranger.
When a person’s movements and tactile sensations were delayed by only half a second, completely healthy volunteers began to feel as though another person were standing behind them. Some even reported sensing several distinct presences.
This offers a possible neurological explanation for the phenomenon.
But it leaves behind one strange question.
Why, in so many accounts, is the “presence” neither chaotic nor threatening?
Is the Third Man Factor an unusual hallucination, a neurological defense system, an ancient survival mechanism — or an experience that science still does not fully understand?
