WARNING: This glitch CAN CORRUPT EVERY ONE OF YOUR SAVE FILES, NOT JUST THE ONE, and I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TRY IT, so don't go poking around with it unless you're playing on an emulator and can back up your save file!
To do this glitch, you need two players (and as a result, two controllers) and be up to the point. Position both players at the same spot where they can both talk to the old man at the same time. The text box gets activated not by button press, but by touching him (big mistake on Square's part). And, as you can see in this video, when two players touch him at the same time, the game crashes, and has a high probability of nuking all your data (didn't in this video). There's probably a higher chance of it erasing if you leave it like that for too long. I don't know why it corrupts it, but sure enough, it happens.
In case you're wondering how this glitch was found, a long time ago, back when I used to play this 3 player with my siblings, we would always race up to the old man to be the one to heal and save. It was eventually a draw.
