When crafting a beautiful slip-on like a loafer, beginners often focus only on the upper. The truth of our craft is that everything matters. Every step influences the final resultânot only the upper, but the bottom as well. Proper sole preparation and precise finishing before the actual sole attachment are incredibly important to the final comfort and look of your footwear.
While we use various materials depending on the specific project, one of the best reasons to use vegetable-tanned leather for your insoles and soles is that it can give you extra comfort and a truly professional fit.
Here is how precise sole preparation transforms your loafers:
đ” Custom Comfort: Because vegetable-tanned leather can be shaped to attach perfectly to the curved places of your shoe last, your leather insoles will precisely repeat the curves of your feet. This exact attachment gives you the best possible comfort and support.
đ” A Solid Foundation: After you skive and shape the vegetable-tanned leather pieces, they set into a solid foundation that matches your shoe last perfectly, while still remaining flexible enough for comfortable walking.
đ” Professional Sole Edges: For a standard cemented shoe sole, you must cut out the leather sole bend using a pattern. If you are making ladies' shoes, you will then skive the sole edge down to an elegant 2-3mm thickness before finishing.
đ” The "Fake" Welt Finish: You can imitate a real welted construction by attaching a ready-made leather strip to the shoe bottom before adding your leather sole. Afterward, you must expertly cut out the extra edge and finish it to make it look smooth and shiny.
In my Loafer Making Course, we cover these vital bottoming steps in detail. You will discover how to create elegant shoe soles with a thin, ready-made welt and master the traditional craft of building leather stacked heels.
Mastering these specific sole-making techniques guarantees your finished loafers will look crisp, elegant, and fully professional.

![Design Shoes with the Right Materials [Bespoke Shoes VS DIY]
Here is a major mistake you might be making when you create shoesâa mistake that completely ruins the comfort and feel of your footwear. When designing shoes, many beginners ignore the importance of matching the right materials.
Letâs break it down: To truly design shoes means you must envision the complete product and its assembly. It is the pattern, the choice of a suitable shoe last, the heels, the soles, and the specific materials you choose. If you choose the wrong combination of materials, you will have a massive problem with comfort.
In this shoemaking tutorial, I will show you exactly what happens when materials mismatch, using a real example from my 2008 Sveta Kletina collection. I designed a pair of boot sandals that looked incredible. The prototype was beautiful, and our focus group loved the look! But there was a huge problem: when walking, the boots constantly slipped off the heel.
Why did this happen? Mismatched materials.
The upper was built with a concept similar to barefoot shoesâvery soft, flexible, without stiffeners, and using inner elastics. However, the custom sole I used was very thick and stiff. Because the sole was not flexible enough to bend with the foot, it constantly pulled back on the soft upper, dragging it right off the heel.
Everything was done correctly on its own, but the combination of these materials simply did not work.
How to solve this design problem:
Solution 1: Change the sole material. I could have used a thin, highly flexible rubber sole and left the soft upper exactly as it was.
Solution 2: Use stiffeners in the upper. I ultimately chose to add stiffeners to the upper because that specific, thick sole design was the most important visual element of the entire collection.
Focus on the entire vision when creating your shoes. Do it right, use the correct materials, apply a professional shoemaking approach, and do not skip any steps!
