Hello my fellow DIY community! I'm engaging in a new pedalboard build which has required me to make custom length midi cables. I purchased the Switchcraft right angle midi plugs (model 05DL5MX) from Redco Audio and I'm using Mogami W2948 cable.
Below are the links to the parts and a written description of the steps I followed to make the cables. Because the parts are quite small, it can be a challenge to solder up one of these plugs but if you follow this little trick you should be good!

1. Strip back 1” of the wire
2. Put the black sleeve of the plug and heat shrink on wire
3. Cut back 2/3 of the grounding wire
4. Strip all the wires a tiny bit
5. Put on gold sleeve
6. Twist and straighten all wires
7. Tin all wires
8. Fill the midi plug points with solder
9. Melt solder in contacts and insert tinned wires, one at a time, when liquefied. *
10. Put on heat shrink and sleeve
11. Orient plug correctly & screw it back together!
* This really is the main trick. I'd suggest going clockwise, hold the colored wire in your left hand and the iron in the right. Touch the lug on the midi connector with the iron and then touch the wire to the lug. When both parts melt, insert the wire down into the small shaft. Remove the iron quickly and let the solder solidify.
