As of 1 January 2026, new SOLAS regulations and Fire Safety Systems (FSS) Code requirements are now in force, requiring ro-ro passenger (ro-pax) ships to protect weather decks with fire detectors and fire monitors.
This presentation covers:
• Which ships are affected (SOLAS II-2/20, Regulation 3.42)
• Fire detection requirements for new builds (¶4.1.4) and existing ships (¶4.1.6, deadline: first survey after 1 January 2028)
• Fire suppression requirements — SOLAS ¶6.2.1 and FSS Code Chapter 7, ¶2.5 for new builds; ¶6.2.3 for existing ships
