Extreme heatwaves kill at least 12,000 people around the world per year and one billion people are at immediate risk. Amid climate change, appliances such as fans can be lifesaving, especially for women and the elderly who traditionally spend more time at home. Many people who need fans do not currently have access to them. Efficient and solar-powered fans are a low-cost and practical solution to keep people cool.

As part of our international work, we deliver Efficiency for Access’ flagship initiative, the Low Energy Inclusive Appliances (LEIA) programme. The programme has provided support to businesses and organisations working to improve the efficiency, affordability and availability of appliances across South Asia. The LEIA programme seeks to double the efficiency and halve the cost of a range of energy efficient appliances.

In our first Human Success Story, we share the experiences of some people living in Pakistan and Bangladesh who discuss the challenges they have witnessed given low access to electricity and fans.

In this video we hear from Tofael Ahmad, Chief Operating Officer of Super Star Group in Bangladesh and Nukhti Bibi, a customer of Harness Energy in Pakistan. Both Harness Energy and Super Star Group sell solar-powered fans that are well suited to those living in rural areas that are not connected to the national electricity grid. Efficiency for Access is a global coalition working to promote high performing appliances that enable access to clean energy for the world’s poorest people. It is a catalyst for change, accelerating the growth of off-grid appliance markets to boost incomes, reduce carbon emissions, improve quality of life and support sustainable development.
